It's a unique and special way for the SU men's basketball team to tip off their season. On Sunday, the team will play a regulation game outdoors on a court built on the U.S.S. Midway in San Diego, California. Our Brad Vivacqua has more.
SAN DIEGO, CA -- It took a few extra days after a bleak weather forecast, but gameday has finally arrived. The matchup between the number 9 ranked Orange, and the 20th ranked San Diego State Aztecs, should be a lot of fun to watch for basketball fans across the country.
Some Syracuse fans even made their way to San Diego for Sunday's game. Only about 5,200 tickets were sold, so the fans attending this game feel privileged to see it in person.
The former Navy aircraft carrier is filled with history, and this game provides a rare chance to see a regulation game outdoors. YNN spoke with a member of SU's San Diego Alumni Association, who said it was great to have Syracuse come to San Diego.
"This is phenomenal, I had the opportunity to watch last year, North Carolina-Michigan State game on the other carrier. And I was just praying that San Diego would get another opportunity to host our team, Syracuse, even if it is against the home team, I think we have to do some serious damage here, and bring it home," said Ray Freiwirth, SU San Diego Alumni Association member.
In addition to SU and San Diego State fans, there are also expected to be quite a few veterans in attendance at Sunday's game. Tip off between the Orange and Aztecs is set for 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
