ROME, N.Y. -- Authorities in Rome are trying to figure out what started an apartment fire that killed a 93-year-old woman. They say Virginia Johnson was found dead at her Black River Boulevard apartment just after 6 p.m. Monday.
According to investigators, the damage was contained to just one apartment. They say another resident tried to knock down the door to save Johnson, but there was too much smoke.
Firefighters do not know if the fire caused her death.
Residents displaced from seven surrounding apartments have since returned to their homes.
