We're still waiting to learn exactly what caused a helicopter to crash in Corning, killing two people on board. It happened around noon Thursday. Our Katie Husband has more.

STEUBEN COUNTY, N.Y. -- The wreckage from a helicopter crash still sits beside the Chemung River in Corning as police investigate the accident that killed two men.

The chopper was being used by NYSEG to inspect transmission lines.

It was around noon on Thursday when authorities believe it got caught in those wires and crashed to the ground.

The result was a fiery explosion that left two men on board dead. The pilot, who worked for the company that owned the chopper, was a 24-year-old from Eugene, Oregon. The passenger was a local NYSEG employee based out of the Horseheads office.

NYSEG released a statement saying they are, "Deeply saddened by this tragic accident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families, friends and co-workers of the two men who were killed in today’s crash."

NYSEG has brought in crews from outside the area to help fix the downed wires. They say they are being proactive in helping their employees out. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
