Dissolution talks have begun in Painted Post. About one hundred residents attended the public seminar Wednesday night to get information about the proposal and hear the pros and cons of what dissolving the village would mean. Our Katie Husband was there and talked to representatives from both groups trying to educate the public on their options for the future of their neighborhood.
PAINTED POST, N.Y. -- It was a large turnout Wednesday night as residents and village officials watched presentations from both Painted Post Tax Relief and Save the Post.
The public event was sponsored by the Painted Post Tax Relief Organization who is behind the idea to try and save property owners money by dissolving into the Town of Erwin.
The group claims the village has no means of improving the property tax base therefore, when costs go up with inflation the only way to pay is to raise property taxes.
Representatives from Save the Post group say the data from the Center for Governmental Research, which originally did the study back in 2010, say the numbers aren't that different.
Villagers pay $16.15 per $1,000 tax assessed value now. Save the Post says after a dissolution, it will cost taxpayers $16.28.
"The only way we can solve the financial problems of the village long-term is to have some additional revenues coming in by consolidating with the Town of Erwin," said Phyllis Draper, Painted Post Tax Relief.
"Dissolution is a very drastic step and obviously taxes need to be addressed, the cost of services is too high and the village is engaged in a very good conversation about that," said Whit Smith, Save the Post.
Now it's up to the villagers on January 24th to make a decision. If they vote no, they have to wait four years for it to be voted on a second time. If yes, the village must prepare a dissolution plan, hold public hearings and will take effect December 31, 2014.
