After many gun and gun shop owners called the new SAFE Act confusing, the New York State Police put up an online list, hoping to clarify the new law. Shortly after that list was posted, it was taken down. But as our Erin Vannella reports, it's being replaced with something the Governor's office hopes will help take the confusion out of some of the strictest gun laws in the nation.

NEW YORK -- With the passage of the New York SAFE Act has come a number of questions about the new gun laws. Many opponents say it's difficult to understand.

That's why New York State Police held a press conference, urging people to head to a new website: NYSafeAct.com.

They say there people can find lists and images of guns now considered assault weapons. State Police are emphasizing the need to register assault weapons, and also that most guns are not impacted by the new laws.

"Most guns are not impacted. Most guns used for hunting and sporting are not assault weapons, and are not affected. Most handguns possessed by people are not assault weapons and are not affected by this law. If you currently own an assault weapon, you can register it with New York State Police beginning on April 15 of this year, and you have one year to register it from that time,” said Joseph D’Amico, NYSP Superintendent.

D'Amico says police will remain exempt from the weapons ban.

If the website doesn't answer your questions, State Police are setting up a hotline. They're urging people to call 1-855-529-4867. The hotline is expected to be fully operational by Monday.
