Once the winter storm moved through the area, it became a great day for some fun in the snow and the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation provided free activities for residents. YNN's Bree Driscoll filed the following report.

NEW YORK CITY, N.Y. -- James Lederer-Michaels, 8, choose to spend his Saturday in the snow building an igloo.

"At first, it started out as a giant mountain of snow," he said. "Then, we just made a giant hole and then, we just made some walls and tons of other kids helped us."

James is just one of hundreds of kids who came out to Riverside Park to play in the snow. Some had snow fights. Others went sledding.

"The bad part is that you always have to walk up the hill and it's really tiring," said one park-goer. "But the good part is, you can zoom down. There's bumps and stuff."

Many parents looked on and tried to keep warm, some with more creative ways than others.

The Department of Parks and Recreation also provided free hot chocolate as an alternate method of warming up.

Parks Commissioner Veronica White said there was very little damage in the parks from the storm and whatever branches did break were cleaned up quickly.

"It is a great day for the parks," White said. "The entire recreation staff is out. Parks across the five boroughs having fun and bringing our sleds out and getting people to exercise and be fit. So it's really a terrific day."

Kids are going have to take advantage of this snow while they can. With temperatures expected to reach the 40s on Monday and Tuesday, it's not going to last very long.
