ESPN’s Andy Katz responds to Boeheim’s comments

  • Text size: + -

CONNECTICUT -- The ESPN reporter insulted by SU basketball coach Jim Boeheim Wednesday night has offered his own version of the events that sparked the comments.

Andy Katz spoke on ESPN's Mike and Mike in the Morning.

At the news conference following SU's loss to Connecticut, Boeheim refused to answer a question from Katz. He called the reporter an idiot, and said he was disloyal.

Speaking to our Mark Larson on Time Warner Cable Sports Channel's Syracuse Sidelines show on Thursday, Boeheim explained his reasons for the outburst. He said they stemmed from an interview Katz did with him in November of 2011, shortly after the Bernie Fine story broke.

According to Boeheim, he told Katz he couldn't talk about the Fine situation and could only talk about the tournament. He says Katz repeatedly asked about Fine, and two or three people walked out of the room in disgust. Katz admits to asking about Fine, but he says there were no conditions set on the interview ahead of time.

"We don't get into those kinds of agreements, especially when there's a news story, so that's number one. Number two, no one left the room, which he says, and no one apologized. That's a fair criticism of me, that's fine if I asked one too many questions. But it is not to say there was any kind of agreement," said Katz.

Katz says he has and will continue to try to reach out to Boeheim to smooth over their relationship.
