Fans heading to the SU-Georgetown basketball game Saturday can help combat hunger throughout the region.

The Food Bank of Central New York is asking fans to bring non-perishable food items to the game.

"Can It!" is a university-wide interfaith initiative, and several students on campus will be helping to collect the donations.

Items needed include canned vegetables, fruits, and tuna fish, peanut butter, soups, rice and cereal. While these are suggestions, the Food Bank is appreciative of any donation.

CNY Food Bank Philanthropy Director Lynn Hy said, "We are in 11 counties in Central and Northern New York, and there's a lot of need out there. So, having large scale donations like this, it really helps us so that we're able to continue our mission and get nutritious food in the community."

Last year, the "Can It!" initiative helped collect more than 1,300 pounds of food at the SU-Georgetown game. The goal is to surpass that this year.
