CORTLAND, N.Y. -- An electrical explosion at SUNY Cortland knocked out power to nine buildings Monday, but fortunately no one was hurt.
The small explosion occurred just before 1 p.m. Monday in the basement of Clark Hall, a student dorm. It lifted a manhole and some brickwork, but the damage was confined to a small electrical room.
The building was evacuated, but the explosion knocked out power to nine buildings in total: Six residence halls, two academic buildings and a dining hall. Some classes were cancelled and dining hours were extended in other buildings.
Students who live in Clark Hall were escorted back to their rooms Monday night to pick up their belongings. They were then brought to a hotel and a bus will bring them back to campus for classes Tuesday.
Investigators are working to find the cause of the explosion.
As of 10 p.m. Monday, the power remained out in all of the buildings.
There is no word yet on the extent of the damage to the electrical system.
